Is a ceramic coating worth it? An honest answer from a Melbourne detailer

By Rishi Babu · 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

Short answer

For most cars you plan to keep for a couple of years, yes. A ceramic coating makes the car much easier to keep clean and protects the paint from UV and bird droppings for around two years. It won't stop stone chips or deep scratches, and it's not worth it on a car you're about to sell.

What a ceramic coating actually does

A ceramic coating is a liquid that bonds to your car's clear coat and hardens into a thin, glassy layer. Water beads straight off it. Dirt struggles to stick. When you wash the car, grime rinses away instead of clinging to the paint.

That's the real benefit. Washing goes from a long scrub to a quick rinse and dry, and the paint holds its gloss between details.

What it won't do

Plenty of people sell ceramic like it's armour. It isn't.

  • It won't stop stone chips on the freeway. That's a job for paint protection film.
  • It won't make the car scratch-proof. A gritty wash mitt will still leave marks.
  • It won't fix swirls or scratches that are already there.

That last one matters most. A coating locks in whatever the paint looks like underneath, so I always machine polish before I coat. Coating over swirl marks just seals the swirl marks in for two years.

When it's worth the money

Ceramic makes sense if you're keeping the car for a couple of years or more, it lives outside, or you're sick of how fast it looks dirty again. Dark colours get the most out of it because they show every water spot.

One of my clients, Ben, booked his Toyota HiLux in after a camping trip off the grid. It was a mess. We did a full interior and exterior detail with a fresh ceramic coat, and in his Google review he called it "100% worth the money." A ute that goes bush is exactly where a coating earns its keep, because mud and dust rinse off instead of baking on.

When I'd skip it

If you're selling in the next few months, put the money into a good detail instead. Same if the car lives in a garage and only comes out on weekends. A quality wax and regular washing will do the job for a lot less.

What a ceramic coating costs in Melbourne

My ceramic packages start from $650. That covers paint decontamination, a machine polish and a 2-year ceramic coating. The price goes up if the paint needs heavier correction or you want a longer-life coating.

I do all ceramic and correction work at my home workshop in Eltham, so the coating cures out of the dust, rain and sun. Quotes around Melbourne vary a lot, and the cheapest ones often skip the polish. Ask exactly what's included before you compare.
